The package also includes an version for PHP5.3+. The data file is functional similar to another one (which only demands PHP 5.2) but makes using a nice new characteristic and is simpler to study/write.
When WordPress requires PHP5.3+ (sometime in the foreseeable future) that document will undoubtedly be used.
